The Enron Trial: Testimony of Paula Rieker (former corporate secretary for Enron)

Direct examination:

THE COURT: All right. You may ask the question [about the reaction of the Board to revelations about the Enron financial situation]. Ask it in a very focused manner.

            Q.        Ms. Rieker, what do you recall the response of the 25 board members to be when that table of loan activity was presented?

            A.        They were outraged.

            Q.         Do you recall   any particular   response   from   any particular board member?

            A.         Yes. I do.

            Q.        And what was that?

            A.         Mr. John Duncan explained that Mr. Lay was using Enron like a damn ATM machine.

Defense attorney: Your Honor, objection again. They're not going into specifics. They're going beyond the reaction.

THE COURT: No. They are. They're citing details of the reaction. Overruled.  What did he say?

THE WITNESS: Mr. John Duncan explained that Mr. Lay was using Enron like a damn ATM machine.
