Reverend Rector of the Pontifical
Faculty
For
the Church the Jubilee Year is a privileged
opportunity to revive and celebrate
their faith in Christ, the light of the
Incarnation, it aims to reflect with
gratitude on the innumerable fruits of holiness
mature within it, in the arc of
these two millennia. However, this does not
exempt to remember the many
inconsistencies that marked the behavior of their
children, casting shadows on
the proclamation of the Gospel. This is why,
among the signs of the
Jubilee, the Pope put the purification
of memory ,
asking all an act of courage and humility in
recognizing his errors and how
many were and are called Christians (cf. Incarnationis
mysterium ,
11). Some
important symposia have been developed in this
direction - for example on
anti-Semitism, the Inquisition and John Hus -
which took place under the
patronage of the Holy See to establish the
historical plan the effective
development of events and discern what is in them
be judged just as with the
Gospel spirit. Such verification seems
important both to apologize to God
and to others for the failures eventually
committed either to guide the
Christian conscience for a more vigilant future in
fidelity to Christ.
Therefore, His Holiness learned with pleasure that
precisely with these
sentiments, this Faculty Theological wants to
remember Giordano Bruno that on
February 17, 1600, was executed in Rome in the
Plaza "Campo de
'Fiori" after the heresy verdict handed down by
the Roman Inquisition
Court. This
sad episode of modern Christian history has
sometimes been assumed by some
cultural currents as reason and emblem of a harsh
criticism of the
Church. The dialogue style inaugurated by the
Second Vatican Council
invites us to overcome all the controversy
temptation to also reread this event
with an open mind to the full historical truth. Therefore,
it is desirable that the said Congress, based on
the self-interest of a faculty
of theology, can make a significant contribution
to the goals of evaluation of
personality and Nola Philosopher vicissitude that,
of course, was precisely in
Naples in convent of Santo Domingo Major, their
training and there made his
religious profession in the Order of Preachers. In
fact, also based on updated research by scholars
of diverse inspiration, it
seems accepted that the way of your thinking,
which developed in the context of
a particularly busy existence and the context of
an unfortunately divided
Christianity, has led to intellectual options
which proved progressively, on
some key points, incompatible with Christian
doctrine. It a further
in-depth investigation to assess the actual scope
of his departure from the
faith. The
fact remains that the members of the Inquisition
Tribunal sued with the then
common coercive methods, pronouncing a verdict
that, in accordance with the law
of the time, was inevitably bears a terrible
death. It is not for us to
express judgments about consciousness of how many
were involved in this
vicissitude. As emerges historically gives us
reason to think that the
judgments of the thinker were animated by the
desire to serve the truth and
promote the common good, also making it possible
to save his
life. Objectively, however, some aspects of
those ways of conduct and, in
particular, its violent end by the hands of the
civil power, can not but be
today for the Church - in this as in all similar
cases - a deep cause for
regret. The Council reminded us that in due
course the truth "does
not impose itself except by his own power" ( Dignitatis
Humanae,
1). Therefore, it must be witnessed in the
absolute respect for the
conscience and dignity of each person. I
trust you, Rector, the task of transmitting these
thoughts to the participants
in the said Congress, to which the Holy Father
sends his blessing
greeting. May the Lord help the third
millennium Church, also through the
painful memory of these events, always better
embody the spirit of the
Gospel. The announcement of Christ, made
with fervor of faith but with
sincere attitudes and respectful dialogue, makes
it more and more as the
Council outlined the "sign and instrument of
intimate union with God and
of all kinds of unit human" ( Lumen
Gentium, 1). With
my cordial greetings. ANGELO

CARTA
Semelhante
ANGELO Card. SODANO |
