Sarah CastleIn July, Sarah Castle (2L) competed with the United States Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team at the World Championships in Birmingham, England. The title of World Champions had been in the hands of the Canadian Women's team for about 20 years. Sarah was a member of the United States team that lost in the gold medal game in 2006, and she, as well as her teammates were ready to redeem that unfortunate loss. However, this summer she and the team brought back the Gold to the United States.

The tournament begins in pool play, and the United States saw Germany (the number two ranked team in the tournament), Japan, China, and Brazil in pool play, and managed to be the only team of the tournament without a loss following pool play. The teams then crossover into the quarter finals where they met Great Britain, who had improved dramatically throughout the tournament. The United States won by 16 points.

In the semi-finals, the United States met Canada, 2006 World Champions. The United States pulled out a great win, although Canada's top player scored 33 points. The full court press from the United States lineup, which their coach liked to call the "Scooby-Twos," because all of the team's class twos played in the lineup, ran Canada down. The United States won by 10, the final score being 68-58.

On July 17, the United States met Germany in the gold medal game. The United States had beat Germany in pool play by 12 and in the gold medal game at the 2008 Paralympic Games. Germany came ready to play, and in fact Germany was ahead for most of the game. In what could be called a "nail-biter," the women gained the lead with just seconds to go. The United States won 55 to 53!
